Superintendent's Update

As we work to improve early literacy, our parents are daily collaborators and key partners in reaching students at Perkins Local Schools. To assist parents in encouraging their children to read, the Ohio Department of Education provides free access to early literacy resources through INFOhio, Ohio's PreK-12 online library. These resources provide vivid visuals, activities, games, songs and nursery rhymes, as well as printable activities to engage students. Included are:

  • World Book Kids encyclopedia
  • Scholastic’s BookFlix  -- fiction and nonfiction eBook titles
  • World Book’s Early World of Learning  -- eBooks, an encyclopedia, classic songs and nursery rhymes for young learners.

Parents may access INFOhio at Early literacy resources may be found by clicking on the box for PreK-5.  In addition, the INFOhio Parent page provides short videos and flyers on reading with children.

The resources do require a username and password in order to access materials. The username is infohio and the password is works (both are lowercase). Please visit INFOhio for valuable assistance in encouraging your child to read.

Our teachers are committed to strengthening their knowledge in order to adjust instruction to meet student needs and bolster early literacy. Region 2’s Early Literacy Specialist, Nancy Osko, shared the following: “This professional development is part of Ohio’s State Systemic Improvement Plan in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Education and State Support Teams throughout the state. As part of the Teacher Based Teams, Building Level Teams and District Level Team process embedded within the Ohio Improvement Framework, each team works at their level to integrate the new learning found in LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling Modules).

This is the work being done for all students by dedicated passionate teachers throughout grades PK-3. The learning is empowering teachers to ask questions, dig deeper, and make instructional decision based on each child’s needs."

A strong partnership between parents and the schools is vital to a child’s education. Our staff is working to tailor instruction to fortify early literacy and we will continue to share resources to aid parents as they endeavor to encourage and assist their young readers.
