Superintendent's Update

A Pirate shoutout to Briar Middle School student Ireland Bennett who initiated, coordinated and secured a grant for the Pen Pal project with local senior citizens this school year. Last week, students met the adults they had corresponded with, sharing stories and their talents for an enjoyable culmination of friendship. We are proud of students like Ireland and countless others whose commitment to service inspires their classmates and the community to collaborate for the betterment of society.

Staff members working with the PAST Foundation presented information at the Board of Education meeting regarding our Design Lab and preparations for the upcoming school year. Our Design Lab is one-of-a-kind in the state that will infuse the arts and design with problem-based educational exploration.

We also took the opportunity to honor and thank our students who presented at the Governor’s Roundtable held at Perkins High School on April 4. These students displayed a sampling of the innovative programs we offer to prepare them for the workforce and further education. Thank you to Meadowlawn students Dylan Crabtree, Maggie Farley, McKaylah Hartley, Adrian McKinley, Maggie McVeigh, and Emma Sturzinger; Briar student Ian Hemphill; and PHS seniors Cecily Schaefer and Caroline Schuster.

Our Levy Committee was recognized as well for the numerous hours they volunteered to rally our community for a successful levy campaign. We so appreciate their dedication and endless support of our school system!

Finally, we presented Furry Elementary School Guidance Counselor Diane Smith with a district award for Unparalleled Dedication. Mrs. Smith goes above and beyond her daily duties to serve the children of Furry Elementary School. Her commitment to the welfare of our youngest students is far-reaching and seeks to enhance the school, social and home lives of these children. She is an inspiration to her peers and a point of pride for the district. For this we congratulate and thank you, Diane Smith!
