Dear Families,

Each August, our students and staff return to school to uphold the Perkins Promise — to empower our students to pursue their dreams and achieve success. We believe that a productive measure of a child’s learning is a myriad of metrics that present a holistic view of a child’s growth. Therefore, PLSD recommends that the state of Ohio also consider including local measures of a child’s performance regarding the six Cs: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, culture, creativity, and connectivity. Additionally, our hope is that the state of Ohio will concentrate on securing an equitable state-funding model because our district has lost millions of state dollars over a ten-year period.

This being said, state testing is one metric that provides information regarding our district’s academic health. Our dedicated, professional staff analyzes multiple data points to determine what more we need to know to meet our Perkins Promise and ensure our students grow into productive citizens. Their teaching talents and skills ensure each child is improving each and every day. We are encouraged to see growth in our students’ scores due to increased academic rigor in our universally designed classrooms.  Once again, our students grew exponentially: a district is required to earn 2.0 to receive an A, and PLSD’s growth score is 24! The following is a summary of our growth and corresponding teaching and learning initiatives that support student achievement.

Attendance is a Community Matter

As your family is an important part of the community at large, your child is a consequential piece of the classroom community. Not only does your child miss out on crucial lessons and connections with classmates, but the classroom community is fragmented when all members are not present. While there are valid instances when students need to be out of school, such as due to illness, we urge you to refrain from removing your child from school for reasons that are not emergent, such as vacation. If you must schedule during the school year, an Application for Waiver of Compulsory Attendancemust be completed and turned in to the building principals two weeks in advance of the date for which approval is requested. This process is in response to HB 410, detailed in the September 1 newsletter about Attendance Awareness Month.
