Issue 21 -- Perkins PI Levy Renewal -- NO NEW TAXES

One maintenance project completed over the summer included a much-needed makeover for the Briar Middle School gymnasium to improve safety and replace outdated bleachers.

Briar Bleacher Replacement:

  • Replaced the original outdated metal mechanical bleachers with new updated plastic electric powered bleachers to mimic the High School bleachers.

Briar Main gym floor / wall paint restoration:

  • A floor section was replaced and repaired, sanded down to bare wood, repositioned 3’ to the north for safety reasons, painted lines and floor finish applied.
  • Walls were repainted from top to bottom, including doors and frames.

In addition, the girls and boys restroom stalls by the back hall/gym area were replaced, as well as the Boiler room entrance double doors.

The Permanent Improvement levy has allowed us to make these approximately $134,000 in repairs and restoration projects at Briar over the last five years, including the replacement of exterior doors and the multi-purpose room ceiling that had badly deteriorated. The levy funds are paramount to the upkeep of our buildings.

In Memory of      Beverley Hanley

A revered former educator and Perkins Alumni and Friends Association Distinguished Staff Hall of Fame member Beverley Hanley recently passed away. In honor of her many contributions to our district, we have included information shared with us by the Alumni and Friends Association that had been part of the Hall of Fame Banquet program the year she was inducted.

Beverley Hanley was born in Salineville, Ohio and was valedictorian of her graduating class at Salineville High School. She received her BA from Mount Union College in 1947; continued her education at Pennsylvania State University, Kent State University, University of Toledo; and earned her MA from Bowling Green State University in 1958. Bev said that she thought she could have been a professional student because she loved to learn.

After teaching at Salem Public Schools, Ravenna City Schools, and Berlin Local Schools, Bev came to Perkins to teach Junior High from 1956-1958. She moved to the high school where she became one of the original faculty member and taught Civics, Government and American History for nine years. She became Head of the Social Studies Department, Dean of Girls, Student Council Advisor, and Senior Class Advisor along with Dick Roesch. From 1967-1975 Bev was Principal of Furry School and then Director of Curriculum from 1975-1978.

The Perkins Township Trustees proclaimed May 21, 1978, Beverley Hanley Day to honor her 31-year career in education.

Last year, I was privileged to have the opportunity to meet and have conversation with her and experienced firsthand her engaging personality. Our district is proud and fortunate to have had such an influential and dedicated educator make her mark on the students of Perkins Schools!
