PERKINS ALUMNI AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION

The Perkins Alumni and Friends Association was formed in 1998 by several graduates and community members. The purposes of the organization are to support the Perkins Schools’ tradition of excellence, focus public attention on the achievements of its graduates, provide information to alumni and friends, and to promote activities for them. We are a nonprofit organization with a board of trustees that holds quarterly meetings open to all. Our alumni building, located at the corner of Taylor Road and Columbus Avenue, houses our office and contains memorabilia consisting of historical data, many pictures, class yearbooks and school scrapbooks. The building also serves as a meeting place and a reunion activity.
The first Alumni and Friends Hall of Fame banquet was held in 2001. It was established to honor Perkins graduates who have distinguished themselves in their work or community, to honor outstanding Perkins staff members, and to honor community members who have given superior service to the Perkins Schools. Since 2007, the Perkins Alumni and Friends Association has sponsored a scholarship campaign and awarded over $30,000 in scholarship money to deserving Perkins seniors who are the sons or daughters of our alumni.
We maintain a website for all alumni and friends at www.perkinsschools.org/community/alumni. It includes information about upcoming events and reunions as well as names and e-mail addresses of Perkins graduates. An association membership form and a Hall of Fame nomination form are accessible on the website. There is also a listing of all our past Hall of Fame inductees. We publish and mail a quarterly newsletter, The Venerable Buccaneer, to all our dues-paying members. It features pictures and news about our alumni as well as school history. We maintain a database of all our graduates with contact information to help class reunion planners.
Our current board of trustees includes:
Peg Lindsley Kingsley recently stepped away as president of our association. The position is currently vacant. Peg is a graduate of the Class of 1961, the first senior class at Perkins High School. She retired in 1995 after teaching 5th and 6th grades in Perkins for 25 years. Peg also is a founding member of the alumni association and, as president, was instrumental in guiding the organization’s growth and achievement of its goals. Peg was inducted into the Perkins Hall of Fame in 2007.
Kathy Kovatch, vice-president. Kathy retired in 2001 after 23 years of teaching 7th and 8th-grade language arts and reading in the Perkins Schools.
Betty Whitacre, secretary. Betty is also a founding member of our association. She retired in 2001 after teaching 3rd grade in the Perkins Schools for 24 years.
Amy Arndt Grant, treasurer. Amy is a 1981 graduate of Perkins High School and daughter of retired Perkins educators, Merle and JoAnne Arndt. Amy is vice-president/senior administrative assistant with Civista Bank in Sandusky. Her two children are PHS graduates: Amber Grant Fowler ’07 and Alex Grant ’10.
Lois Halladay Sartor, member-at-large. Lois is a graduate of the Class of 1961.
Char Schuman, member-at-large. Char taught art at Perkins High School from 1974 until her retirement in 2009.
