Superintendent's Update

Perkins United, a community group focusing on bringing schools and the community together, celebrated the holiday season by hosting a tree lighting ceremony, caroling and a special visit by Santa at Strickfaden Park.  It was a festive evening that reminded everyone that in Perkins cultivating a compassionate community is truly about the joy of giving back to others. Many individuals, groups and businesses donated and participated in this special night: Corso's; Friends of Perkins Township; Firelands Electric; Schlessman Seed; Berardi's; Bill Bartolet; Home Depot; Hermes Farms; Boca Construction; the Zokle Family; EHOVE Police Cadets; Kroger; Lowe's; K & K Home Furnishings; The Party Place; Sam's Club; Amy and J.J. Reese; Perkins High School Art Department,  Chamber Choir, Cheerleaders, and Pirates for Peers; and Perkins Township Fire, Police, and Maintenance Departments.

Thank you, Perkins United!

Due to the levy failure, the Perkins leadership team has begun the difficult process of preparing a reduction plan.  Our Fiscal Caution status mandates that the district reduce expenditures by $1.4 million for the 2017-18 school year, and by $8 million over the next five years to ensure a healthy forecast and no deficit spending. Fiscal Caution also requires a Performance Audit, which takes a deeper look and will make recommendations to the board-appointed committee if a future levy does not pass and we are transitioned to Fiscal Emergency.  The audit will be published in April to inform the May forecast and will likely require us to reduce staff, programs, courses, transportation routes and building access, with some reductions occurring this year.  The Board will review the plan and must make decisions by March. The reductions recommended by the Performance Audit take a district to state minimum levels for instruction and services when the Ohio Auditor of State designates Fiscal Emergency.
