COVID Update: Changes In Contact Tracing, Family Notifications

During the continuing pandemic, Perkins Local Schools administrators and nurses have partnered with the Erie County Health Department to ensure that the schools take steps to ensure the health and safety of your students. We also have continued to monitor and adhere to the recommendations of state and federal health agencies.

On Wednesday, January 5, the Erie County Health Department recommended that school districts in Erie County no longer contact trace reported cases of COVID-19 and that students should no longer be subjected to quarantine unless they are exposed to the virus outside the school setting.

Perkins Local School District will follow the recommendations. Since contact tracing is no longer in place, Perkins Schools will no longer send email notifications to students who may have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

Additionally, any Perkins Schools students, teachers, or staff who test positive for COVID-19 still are required to isolate at home for five days, regardless of vaccination status.

The Ohio Department of Health’s “Mask To Stay/Test To Play” guidelines were updated on December 30, 2021, and remain in effect. The “Mask To Stay/Test To Play” guidelines can be found here. The Ohio Department of Health’s guidelines for individuals to manage exposure to the virus can be found here.

Perkins Schools also will follow the updated guidelines from Ohio Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine return dates for students, teachers, and staff.

Currently, the guidelines are:

  • Students and staff that test positive for COVID-19 may return to school five days after the onset of symptoms if they are asymptomatic OR symptoms are getting better. For the following five days, a mask must be worn.

    • If unable to mask, may return 10 days after the onset of symptoms.

  • Students and staff exposed to COVID-19 outside the school setting:

    • Unvaccinated/Partially Vaccinated: may return to school five days after exposure if they are asymptomatic. For the following five days, a mask must be worn.

  • Students and staff exposed to COVID-19 within the school setting
