Briar Staff Gets Place To Relax

Briar teacher Leslie Drury in the Wellness RoomWhen teachers and staff at Briar Middle School need a mental health moment, they now have a place they can go for a 10- to 20-minute break during lunch, planning periods, before or after school.

A small room in the rear of the building has been converted to a Wellness Room – aka a “Zen Room” as Principal Jeff Thom describes it – that serves as a place where Briar staff members can go, close the door, and catch their breath when they get stressed.

Briar teacher Leslie Drury assembled the room.

“We really didn’t have a place in the building for staff members to go and collect themselves,” Mrs. Drury says. “Teachers need to have a place where they can go and reset during the day.”

They now have such a place.

Inside the room, staff members will find a comfortable recliner, aromatherapy, and low lights – and quiet, if that’s what they want. Staff members can bring in music or ambient sounds to meditate or just relax.

The staff used money from a grant from the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Erie and Ottawa Counties to buy the furnishings for the room.
