Briar Repairs Begin After Flooding

Demolition crews arrived this week at Briar Middle School to remove the floors in the gymnasium, band room, and choir room, which were ruined by flooding caused by a broken water pipe at the school last week.

The crews, contracted through RestorePro in Sandusky, began tearing out carpeting and risers in the choir and band rooms, and the varnished wood floor and base materials in the gym on Tuesday morning.

The spaces have been closed to students, and music classes are being taught in alternative classrooms. New flooring and cabinetry will be installed in the music rooms, and that part of the project is expected to be complete within four weeks.

Meanwhile, once the gym floor has been removed, a new one will be installed. That floor will include updated athletic logos, and be striped not only for basketball and volleyball, but also pickleball.

The Briar gym is expected to be closed to students and classes for seven weeks. The physical education classes will be taught at Perkins High School. Students will walk over to PHS unless there is inclement weather and the phys ed classes will be in available spaces at Briar.

Cost estimates for the demolition and reconstruction projects are not yet available. School administrators are meeting this week with insurance adjusters.

Approximately 80,000 gallons of water spilled into the classrooms, gymnasium, and hallways on the evening of Wednesday, January 22, when a 4-inch water pipe ruptured inside the rear of the building. A neighbor along Matthes Avenue notified Perkins Police that water was coming from the back of the building.

Perkins School maintenance crews immediately responded and stopped the flow of water. Crews worked overnight to remove pools of water in the building and air out the building.

Classes at Briar were canceled on Thursday, but students returned on Friday, January 24.
